EXPLORING ANIME ART

Ages 11-17
This class will focus on the popular style of anime and manga. Students will learn to draw the human figure in the style of Japanese animation and comics and will explore the animation process, storyboarding and character design. A brief introduction to Japanese culture and language through its use in anime will also be presented. Materials fee is included in the tuition.

Students will create a number of clay objects while learning wheel throwing and hand building skills. Explore glazing and color as well as surface treatment options. Students will make basic, cylindrical forms on the wheel and coil and slab built forms by hand. Dress to get messy and bring your imagination! Materials fee is included in the tuition.

THE ART OF CARICATURES
TN03
Ages 11 - 15
Ever wonder how the caricature artists at fairs make those quirky, unique and humorous portraits…and so quickly? In this class you’ll find out how! After establishing a foundation in the history and theory of caricature drawing, students will learn how to see, what to look for, what to exaggerate and how to construct a wide variety of caricature drawings. Portraits as well as full body caricatures will be discussed. By the end of class, students will be ready to set up shop and will never have to pay for a portrait again! Please bring a sketch pad with you to class.

LIVE ANIMAL ART

Ages 8-12
Sweetwater is partnering with the Animal Rescue League of Pennsylvania’s Wildlife Center in this new & exciting class for kids! Each day, a different live animal will be brought to class including an owl, a skunk, kittens, reptiles and other critters. Students will learn about the habitat and characteristics of each of these creatures. They will then reproduce each one in a different medium including polymer clay, pastels, colored pencil, and collage. Tammy Frech, Wildlife Educator of the Wildlife Center, will attend several classes as a guest instructor. Materials fee is included in the tuition.

INTRODUCTION TO OIL PAINTING FOR TEENS

Ages 11-15
In this course, students will be introduced to painting with oils. This course is suitable for beginners as well as the more advanced painting student. Lessons will focus on composition, space, line, form, and light. Students will learn the basics of color theory and learn how to properly mix tertiary colors, shades, tones and tints, without creating a “muddy” palette. Students will also experience the “forgiveness” that this painting medium offers to a young painter as they learn the versatility of oil painting. Materials fee is included in the tuition.

EXPERIMENTAL WATERCOLOR WORKSHOP

Ages 11-15
Explore the possibilities of using found objects from nature to create unusual textures with watercolor paints. A variety of techniques will be demonstrated to help students broaden their ability and understanding the art of watercolor. In addition to texture and technique, basic color theory will also be discussed. Natural materials will be provided, but students are encouraged to bring in any additional elements that they would like to experiment with. Materials fee is included in the tuition.

HOLIDAY BEAD-A-THON

Ages 6-11 with an adult OR Ages 12 & up
Combine beautiful beads, a few simple techniques, and a splash of fun and what do you get? Gorgeous holiday jewelry to wear or give proudly. Use quality beads from around the world to create necklaces, bracelets, earrings and more… the choice is yours! Holiday-themed and special beads will be available. Tuition includes one individual only. Cost of materials depends on the type and number of projects completed, but will range from $7 to $25, payable to the instructor on the day of class. Children’s beads will also be available at a nominal price.

LESSONS IN ART
We now have private lessons offered
in art (for Sweetwater members only). You or your child (Ages 6 & up) can be instructed
in a variety of media. The cost is $50/hour, and each lesson
has a 1 1/2-hour minimum. Receive a discounted rate of $35/hour, when you register for a total of 6 or more hours at one time.
Full payment must accompany registration. In the event that the student must cancel a scheduled lesson, he/she should notify the office by calling 412-741-4405. Student cancellations must be made at least twenty-four hours in advance in order to receive a make-up lesson. Scheduled lessons cancelled by the instructor or by Sweetwater will be rescheduled.
