SUMMER CAMPS

Sweetwater Center for the Arts offers weekly, half-day and full-day summer camps for ages 3-17 in the visual, performing, culinary and literary arts.  Every week is a new adventure as children and teens explore various themes and art forms. Summer camps run from June 16-August 15, 2008. 

On the first day of camp, please go to the upstairs lobby for camp check-in.
 
All campers must have a Permission Form/Medical Waiver on file before they can participate in camp activities.  These forms will be mailed to camp participants prior to the camp start date.

If you register your child for one morning camp and one afternoon camp in the same week, you may sign up for the supervised lunch ($5/day; lunch is not included) at the time of registration. Camp participants (ages 4-15) who are not accompanied by an adult and wish to stay in the building between camps must sign up for the supervised lunch. Supervision is provided by a Sweetwater instructor or staff member. 

Supervised lunch registration must be made at least two business days prior to the camp start date in order for arrangements to be made.  Please contact the Education Director for questions regarding the supervised lunches.

Due to food allergies, Sweetwater does not provide snacks or lunch. Parents must provide snacks, drinks, or lunch for their children.  Snacks and drinks can also be purchased in the office.

The Creative Summer Experience

**Full day, two week camp! (June 16 - 27)**

Once again, the Sewickley Community Center and Sweetwater Center for the Arts look forward to providing your child with a creative, fun and enriching experience using the resources of both organizations. This two week summer camp will build on the theme "Go Global!" as we encourage your son or daughter, through the visual and performing arts, educational play activities and group projects, to engage in the vitality and history of other world cultures. New campers as well as returning campers are welcome! The 10% early registration discount does not apply to this camp.

  • Camp fees:  $325
  • If you are in need of extended day services, please call 412-741-4405 for more information.
  • Daily drop-off will be at Sweetwater Center for the Arts, in the upstairs lobby
  • Daily pick-up will be at the Sewickley Community Center, located at 15 Chadwick Street, Sewickley.
  • The proximity of Sweetwater Center for the Arts to the Sewickley Community Center allows for campers to walk from one site to the other under close supervision.  Note to parents:  Campers WILL NOT cross Route 65 on their walk. Instead, they will walk along Bank Street which takes you under Route 65.
  • Register early because space is limited.  Register at Sweetwater by phone (412-741-4405), in person or by mail.  The Sewickley Community Center will not take registrations.
  • Those interested in volunteering as counselors-in-training, please contact Sweetwater Center for the Arts at 412-741-4405.
  • Scholarships are available for those demonstrating financial need. Please call Sweetwater to request a scholarship application.

Sweetwater Sampler

Every week is a new adventure in this multi-media medley. Students will create a variety of projects and explore a multitude of techniques. Experiment with drawing, painting, sculpture, and printing, and discover the art medium that you fancy the most. Materials fee is included in the tuition.

Cooking with Flair

Crank up the heat in Sweetwater's kitchen this summer and become a master chef! Children will learn the fundamentals of key stations in a professional kitchen including, but not limited to, grill, saute, prep, pasta, pastry and service. This camp will also focus on basic food safety and beginner knife skills. Students are asked to bring a wood or poly cutting board and a 6"-8" chef's knife to class for the week, if available. Some extra knives will be available for use. Children will be closely supervised with knife use. This camp is also offered during Week 9.

Modern Masters

Explore the highly unique art of some of the most important avant-garde artists of the modern movement in the early 20th century: Gustav Klimt, Amedeo Modigliani, Marie Laurencin, and Joan Miro. Particular attention will be given to the way in which these artists navigated the boundary between abstraction and reality in canvases of bold form and color. Create several masterpieces of your own emulating their distinctive styles. The materials fee is included in the tuition.

Drawing Mania

It is important to start with the basics to ensure successful artistic expression in any medium.   Draw fun subjects like animals and plants, people, portraits, and 3D spaces while learning about line, shape, texture, shading, and perspective.  Experiment with colored pencil, ink, charcoal, and pastel.  There will be no end to what can be created with the foundation gained from this class! The Art of Dance

Did you know that dance and visual art have a lot in common?  Discover the connections between these two art forms as your feet glide across the dance floor and your brush glides across the canvas.  In this fun and creative class for students with all levels of experience, we will explore the elements of dance through creative movement games, technique activities, and choreography.  In the art room, we will learn about art ideas that relate to dance, such as movement, rhythm, and space.  In addition, students will be creating art costumes for a short performance at the end of the week.  Children should wear comfortable clothing.  Dance shoes are not required.  Materials fee is included in the tuition

Art in Action

Prepare to be MOVED in this exciting class about ACTION and ART! Students will create abstract “action paintings” in the splattered style of Jackson Pollock, make mobiles in a spin-off of Alexander Calder’s entrancing moveable sculptures, and compose explosive colored pencil drawings of figures or locomotives in the style of Umberto Boccioni and the Futurist artists.  Don’t miss out on the action!  Materials fee is included in the description.

World Traveler

Travel around the world on your summer vacation as you explore the art of exotic and far-away lands from the comfort of the Sweetwater art studios.  Create mystical, embellished low-relief clay sculptures in Southeast Asia, mosaics in the Middle East, and sacred “codice” paintings in South America.  Along the way, you’ll learn about world cultures, symbols, and a variety of authentic art techniques.  See you there!  Materials fee is included in the tuition.

Painting with Monet

Explore Impressionist paintings that are full of light and color and capture the beauty of a fleeting moment in time!  Children will create their own Impressionist works of art modeled after the masterpieces by Monet, Cassatt, Degas, Renoir, and Van Gogh using a variety of media.

Cartooning

Calling all young cartoonists! Bring your imagination and sense of humor! This class will introduce children to the history of cartooning with a focus on character design and concept. Students will learn how to draw basic human structures using simple shapes and will learn how to draw comic book characters in a variety of positions, expressing an assortment of emotions. Children will use their limitless imaginations as they create their own cartoon characters and comic strips/books while developing drawing techniques. Materials fee is included in the tuition.

Musical Theater Workshop with Mario Melodia

Children entering grades 2 - 6 in the fall

Once again, Mr. Melodia brings his sense of style, expertise, talent and work ethic to Sweetwater in this fantastic summer camp experience that will introduce students to creative dramatics, scene study, dance and basic vocal techniques in an age-appropriate way.  In the past, children have performed shows by Disney and current children’s movies and musicals.  Students will rehearse and perform for family and friends, showcasing the skills they have acquired throughout the week. 

  • You may pick up a copy of the script on Friday, July 11 between 9:00 a.m.-8:00 p.m.  Scripts will not be available before this date.
  • Please report to Sweetwater at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 12, for the read-through.  Please wear comfortable clothing, soft, rubber-soled shoes and bring a tape recorder that you, the student, can operate.  Please also bring these items with you to the camp on Monday.  The read-through (not mandatory, but advisable) will last approximately two hours.
  • Camp begins on Monday, July 14.  Campers will meet from 8:30-11:00 a.m. each day through Friday, July 18.  Students with solo performances may be required to arrive early or stay late to practice; Mr. Melodia will notify parents of any changes or additions to the schedule.  Dress rehearsal times will be determined.
  • Please bring your own snacks and drinks.
  • The performance will be held at Sweetwater on Saturday, July 19, from 10:00 a.m.-11:30 a.m.  Refreshments will be served after the performance.

Live Animal Art

Sweetwater is partnering with the Animal Rescue League of Pennsylvania’s Wildlife Center in this new & exciting camp for kids!  Each day, a different live animal will be brought to class including an owl, a skunk, kittens, reptiles and other critters.  Students will learn about the habitat and characteristics of each of these creatures.  They will then reproduce each one in a different medium including polymer clay, pastels, colored pencil, and collage.  Tammy Frech, Wildlife Educator of the Wildlife Center, will attend several classes as a guest instructor.  Materials fee is included in the tuition.

Exploring Art & Nature at Fern Hollow Nature Center

Join Fern Hollow Nature Center and Sweetwater Center for the Arts for an exciting week of adventure as campers hike trails, view insects and study nature.  In the morning, children will participate in an art camp with Sweetwater veteran instructor, Sally Oberdick, where they will create artwork utilizing materials found in nature as well as materials found on Sweetwater's shelves.  During the afternoon, campers will turn their attention to the natural beauty of Fern Hollow with Rachel Sica.  Campers will enjoy afternoon hikes in the meadow searching for wildflowers, creepy crawlies and birds.  Material fee is included in the tuition.

Asian Adventure

This camp will focus on different techniques used in making art in China, Philippines, and Japan.  We will use various media—watercolor, ink, paper cutting, printmaking—and even look at the sculptures from these countries. Students will have the opportunity to study and be inspired by original art objects from these countries from the instructor’s collection.  Materials fee is included in the tuition.

Junkyard Treasures

Campers will create sculpture out of found objects, and in the process, learn the principles of design including color, shape and texture.  Students will also create a spontaneous sculpture—which involves no planning—seeing what happens as they go.    For inspiration, students will be introduced to the work of famous sculptors all of whom used found objects in their work.  Materials fee is included in the tuition.

Visit Fern Hollow for an exciting week of adventure as campers hike trails, view insects and study nature.  Children will participate in an art camp taught by Sweetwater veteran instructor, Sally Oberdick, where they will create artwork utilizing materials found in nature as well as materials found on Sweetwater’s shelves.  Children will make a bird bath, nature collage, and will participate in a scavenger hunt.  All activities will be chronicled in a take-home journal.  Materials fee is included in the tuition.

The Artist's Apprentice

Travel back in time and study under some of the world's greatest artists!  We will learn about Pablo Picasso, Paul Gauguin, Georgia O'Keefe and Andy Warhol, to name just a few.  Find out why each artist created the works for which they are famous, who or what influenced their decision to become an artist and much more.  Create masterpieces after the style of each artist and add your own personal touches to make the work uniquely your own.
