SWEETWATER SAMPLER

Every week is a new adventure in this multi-media medley that is taught by different Sweetwater instructors. Students will create a variety of projects and explore a multitude of techniques. Experiment with drawing, painting, sculpture, and printmaking and discover the art medium that you fancy most. Materials fee is included in the tuition.

CHILDREN’S CERAMICS
CH02
Ages 6 - 10

Children will be introduced to the basic processes of ceramics. Clay construction techniques such as coiling, soft-slab and molding will be used to create sculptural works. Students will also be instructed on wheel throwing techniques to create simple tableware. Students will create both functional and sculptural pieces as they learn how to work with clay and use equipment safely and properly. Various methods of finishing and decorating pieces will also be covered. Materials fee is included in the tuition.

CHILDREN’S CARTOONING

This class will introduce children to the history of cartooning with a focus on character design and concept. They will learn how to draw basic human structures using simple shapes and will learn how to draw comic book characters in a variety of positions, expressing an assortment of emotions, using their limitless imaginations as they create their own characters and comic strips/books while developing drawing techniques. Materials fee is included in the tuition

LIVE ANIMAL ART
CH04
Ages 8 - 12
NEW PROJECTS! RETURNING STUDENTS WELCOME!

Sweewtater is partnering with the Animal Rescue League of Pennsylvania’s Wildlife Center in this exciting class for kids! Each week, a different animal will be brought to class, including: a red-tailed hawk, turtles, opossum, ducks, salamanders and geckos.* Students will learn about the habitats and characteristics of each of these creatures and will then reproduce each one in a different medium such as polymer clay, toold metal, collage, graphite and watercolor pencil. Tammy Frech, Wildlife Educator at the Wildlife Center, will attend several classes as a guest instructor. Materials fee is included in the tuition. *This list of animals is based on their availability from the Animal Rescue League. If a particular animal listed is not available at the time of class, a different animal may be substituted.

SCULTPURE FOR KIDS

Come see why clay isn’t the only thing you can use to make sculptures! A sculpture is a three-dimensional form created by carving and shaping a soft or hard bodied material to create a work of art. We’ll learn about different types of sculptures such as relief, mobile, kinetic and freestanding sculpture. We’ll create our own sculptures using materials such as paper, wax, wire, plaster, etc. Materials fee is included in the tuition.

PAPIER MACHÉ GIFTS & ORNAMENTS

Explore the endless possibilities of papier maché art as we create a variety of three-dimensional holiday gifts and ornaments. Ordinary newspaper strips will be transformed into extraordinary projects including a useful piggy bank, a unique sculpture, and decorative ornaments. We’ll also explore how to finish our creations using different painting and embellishing techniques. Materials fee is included in the tuition.

FREE MAVUNO Children's Workshops Ages 6 - 10
Sweetwater will host free art workshops for kids during our MAVUNO festival, which is a celebration of African American Art and Culture. These workshops will focus on accomplished African American artists from the 20th century. Pre-registration is required.

FAITH RINGGOLD 101

Ages 6 - 10

Students will explore the life and work of Faith Ringgold, an African American artist who is renowned for her painted story quilts and children's books. Learn how Faith Ringgold is inspired by her family heritage and childhood memories to tell stories through vibrant painting techniques and quilting. Students will create their own story painting then use bold patterned fabics to add unique quilted boarders. Materials fee is included in the tuition.

SAM GILLIAM 101

Ages 6 - 10

Students will explore the works of Sam Gilliam, an African American artist who is internationally recognized as one of America's foremost Color Field painters and Abstract artists. Students will learn about Color Field painting and how it is characterized by large feilds of flat, solid colors and will then create COlor Feild paintings of their own design. Materials fee is included in the tuition.

AUTUMN ADVENTURES

In this workshop, we’ll examine different autumn leaves. We’ll look at their unique shapes, colors and textures. After examination, we’ll use our leaves in a printmaking project to create a beautiful fall collage! Materials fee is included in the tuition.

DELICIOUS DESSERT ART

Ages 6 - 10

Students will discover the scrumptious artwork of Wayne Thiebold, an American Pop Artist celebrated for his depictions of cakes, pastries, popular American food, and other pop culture objects. Students will learn about the history of Pop Art and its representation of popular cultural images. Students will experiment with texture and vibrant color to paint their own delicious paintings! Materials fee is included in the tuition.

COLORED PENCIL REPOUSSÉ

In this dynamic workshop, we’ll combine the ancient art of embossing metal with the beauty of stained glass windows. The process of repoussé will be used to create a dazzling relief sculpture that will be mounted and ready to hang or give as a gift. We’ll also create impressive repoussé ornaments that will be perfect for displaying all year round! Materials fee is included in the tuition.

MOSAIC MEMORIES

What a better way to capture a special memory than in a unique homemade picture frame! Students will choose from tons of mosaic tiles, seashells, buttons, stones and gems to create their own design. Students will then transfer their design using traditional mosaic techniques onto their own wooden picture frame to create a beautiful piece of mosaic artwork. Materials fee is included in the tuition.

KANDINSKY KOLOR!

In this colorful workshop, students will explore the work of abstract artist Wassily Kandinsky. We’ll learn about color theory and then create a mixed media painting project resembling Kandinsky’s Color Study. Materials fee is included in the tuition.

MISTER BONES

Ages 6 - 10

The leg bone’s connected to the knee bone and the knee bone’s connected to the thigh bone! In this workshop, we’ll learn about anatomy and the proportion of our skeleton, and then create a line drawing in pencil followed by black sharpie. We’ll also learn how to write our names in “bone” calligraphy and create a “scary skull” picture. Bring your art bones to life! Materials fee is included in the tuition..

THANKSGIVING FEAST

In this cooking workshop, children will prepare a traditional Thanksgiving feast. The menu will include turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, pumpkin pie and cranberry sauce. Children will also learn how to carve the turkey as well as the proper way to set the family table for Thanksgiving Dinner. Materials fee is included in the tuition. Due to the nature of this class, Sweetwater is unable to accommodate food allergies/dietary restrictions.

TOTEM POLE TOWERS

Did you know the that the position held in highest esteem in Native American cultures is actually the “low man on the totem pole”? Come learn more fun facts and history about these wooden carvings. THANKSGIVING TRADITIONS

In this workshop students will learn about some well-known and not so well-known Thanksgiving traditions. Participants will create art projects that can also double as Thanksgiving decorations while learning about the origin of the holiday and what the first Thanksgiving was really like. ORIGAMI ORNAMENTS

Learn the intricate art of Japanese paper folding as we create three-dimensional holiday ornaments. An assortment of shiny and pattern papers will be transformed into elegant stars and birds. Colorful beads and string will be added to make the creations ready to hang. Materials fee is included in the tuition.

HOLIDAY ORNAMENTS IN CLAY

Brighten your home during the holiday season with hand-made, one-of-a-kind ornaments! In the first class, students will use cookie cutters and other techniques (all fun winter shapes like snowmen, gifts, and Christmas trees!) to form their ornaments in clay. The second class allows students the chance to decorate their creation, through use of under-glazes, surface treatments, and acrylic paint finishes. The ornaments make perfect gifts or home decorations that can be used year after year! Materials fee is included in the tuition.

Holiday Cookie Extravaganza

Be a sugar artist! Nothing says home for the holidays like freshly baked cookies. In this workshop students will bake and decorate several different kinds of cookies and take them home. Of course, there will be some tasting in class! Kids - roll up your sleeves and get ready to have some festive fun in the kitchen! Materials fee is included in tuition.
