Every week is a new adventure in this multi-media medley.  Students will create a variety of projects and explore a multitude of techniques.  Experiment with drawing, painting, sculpture, and printmaking and discover the art medium that you fancy most.  Materials fee is included in the tuition.

LIVE ANIMAL ART
CH02
Ages 8-12

Sweetwater is partnering with the Animal Rescue League of Pennsylvania’s Wildlife Center in this exciting class for kids!  Each day, a different live animal will be brought to class including an owl, a skunk, reptiles and other critters.  Students will learn about the habitat and characteristics of each of these creatures.  They will then reproduce each one in a different medium including polymer clay, pastels, colored pencil, and collage.  Tammy Frech, Wildlife Educator of the Wildlife Center, will attend several classes as a guest instructor.  Materials fee is included in the tuition.

DRAWING & CARTOONING

Ages 6-10

This class will introduce children to the history of cartooning with a focus on character design and concept. They will learn how to draw basic human structures using simple shapes and will learn how to draw comic book characters in a variety of positions, expressing an assortment of emotions, using their limitless imaginations as they create their own characters and comic strips/books while developing drawing techniques. Materials fee is included in the tuition.

CHILDREN'S CERAMICS
CH04
Ages 6-10

Children will be introduced to the basic processes of ceramics.  Clay construction techniques such as coiling, soft-slab and molding will be used to create sculptural works.  Students will also be instructed on wheel throwing techniques to create simple tableware.  Students will create both functional and sculptural pieces as they learn how to work with clay and use equipment safely and properly. Various methods of finishing and decorating pieces will also be covered.  Materials fee is included in the tuition.

FOLK ART

Explore the more traditional side of art as we learn about traditional crafts that have been passed down from generation to generation.  Learn about the elements and meanings that are inherent to the traditional crafts, making them definitive of their native countries.  While folk art exists in every culture, we will focus on North American folk art, as we learn about folk paintings, stenciling, quilting and more! Materials fee is included in the tuition.

JAPANESE FISH PRINTING

Learn the art of “Gyotaku” (Japenese fish printing).  Gyotaku is a form of nature printing used by Japanese fisherman to record their catches.  Join us as we learn about the history of the art and make our very own colorful collages.  Materials fee included in the tuition.

MONA

In this class, children will borrow the model, “Mona Lisa” from the Renaissance Artist/Inventor, Leonardo DaVinci and will create a whole new makeover for this timeless beauty.  After a brief art history lesson about this famous painting, young painters will work from a transferred image and transform Mona to a new changed woman.  Materials fee is included in the tuition.

From the Byzantine Empire to the work of the contemporary artist Joyce Kozloff, mosaics have dazzled with their brilliant color and scintillating light.  Using various materials -- tiles, marbles and seashells, students will create mosaic collage photo frames, flower pots and light switch covers that can enliven any room.  Materials fee is included in the tuition.

EXPERIMENTAL WATERCOLOR FOR FALL

Celebrate the fall foliage by using the colors, textures, and mood of the Autumn season to inspire dynamic watercolor paintings!  Explore the possibilities of using found objects from nature to apply watercolor.  Sticks, feathers and other natural materials will be used.  Some natural materials will be provided, but students are encouraged to bring additional materials to experiment with texture in order to make their work more personal (ex. twigs, pinecones, etc).

THANKSGIVING TRADITIONS

Create sparkling beaded ornaments for the tree as well as holiday jewelry you can wear or give as gifts.  Children can select from a special selection of beads and holiday charms and design their own pieces.  Each child will make four projects: ornament, choker, bracelet, and key chain or back pack dangle.  Materials fee is included in the tuition.

HOLIDAY ORNAMENTS IN CLAY

Brighten your home during the holiday season with hand-made, one-of-a-kind ornaments! In the first class, students will use cookie cutters and other techniques (all fun winter shapes like snowmen, presents, and Christmas trees!) to form their ornaments in clay.  The second class allows students the chance to decorate their creation, through use of under-glazes, surface treatments, and acrylic paint finishes. The ornaments make perfect gifts or home decorations that can be used year after year!  Materials fee is included in the tuition.

ECO-FRIENDLY ART GIFTS

Few works of art can surpass the holistic and delicate beauty of nature.  In this holiday workshop, students will create a number of nature-derived gifts for their loved ones.  Students will make hand creams, aromatherapy bath products, and flavored lip balms.  Students are encouraged to bring in recyclable containers from home, which we will embellish with color and decoration to enhance the beauty of their natural gifts.

Examples of recyclable objects to bring: empty bottles of various shapes and colors, altoid tins, interested boxes and product packaging (sturdy product tag from name brand clothing).  All other materials included in the tuition.

Be a sugar artist!  Nothing says home for the holidays like freshly baked cookies.  In this workshop students will bake and decorate several different kinds of cookies and take them home.  Of course, there will be some tasting in class!  Kids - roll up your sleeves and get ready to have some festive fun in the kitchen!  Materials fee is included in tuition.
