Sweetwater Lecture Series Presents Circa 1800: Birthpangs of the Modern World

SEWICKLEY, Pa.- Dr. Gretchen Bender will host a lecture about the centennial turn of 1800. Learn about the anxiety, uncertainty and the profound consciousness of rapid change that compelled artists to make sense of a new "Modern" world. Come to Sweetwater Center for the Arts on Friday, March 11, 2011 from 6:30 p.m.-8:30 p.m. Dr. Bender will focus on two themes: the body and nature, arguing both became rich sources of inspiration for artists who sought to evoke the element of tension of what it meant to be human at that time, depicting scenes of devastating violence and resounding beauty.

Join Dr. Gretchen Bender of the University of Pittsburgh's History of Art and Architecture Department for this informal lecture followed by discussion. Light hors d'oeuvres and refreshments will be served. The price of attendance is $5 for members and $10 for non-members.
